Microsoft's VP of OS David Treadwell celebrates the return of windows in Windows with a great story

David Treadwell, Corporate VP, Operating Systems Group told a great story about the development of Windows 10. This was a conversation he, Terry Meyerson, and others had with one very well known developer, Bill Gates:

We were reviewing with Bill our plan for making Windows 10 great for developers like you. As you might imagine, review with Bill [Gates] is always a big deal. So we were well prepared, but we were also nervous.

One of the points that I made is that we've been getting lots of feedback, from people like yourselves, that they didn't like one thing about the modern platform in Windows 8... It only supported full-screen applications, no windowing...

So I told Bill, one of the things we're doing in Windows 10 is that we're bringing back this fine feature from 1986: resizeable, overlapping windows for apps. [crowd applauds, Dave cheers]

And Bill paused... and he looked at me kind of intently for a second... and then he said, "Wow! That's a really great idea! You know what we should do? We should name the product after that feature."

So I told him that the joke in the engineering team is that we really should have called it "Window 8".

True story... it happened just like that.
