Julia re-iterated that Office 365 is where innovation takes place, and that "every three years" there's a kind of "catch up moment" in which the server product is updated to reflect, where possible, features in the cloud.

I love Julia and the Office 365 team, but it's a bit odd to position this as an established pattern. In fact, SharePoint 2016 is the first "catch up" and I'm not at all convinced that the 'pattern' as stated will repeat.  Don't get me wrong--SharePoint is not dead on prem. Microsoft seems fully committed to future releases. But I'm not sure they'll be done just the same way as we've seen between 2013 and 2016.  Change is inevitable.
