TechEd North America 2014 is coming up soon in Houston.  Although it’s not a dedicated SharePoint conference, there’s still plenty of content for you to check out.  There is a mix of brand new content plus new takes on content from SPC14.

There are over sixty-five sessions and hands-on-labs about SharePoint being offered this year.  Take a look at some of these sessions on the session list.    You can also find the same information in Schedule Builder.

  • Integrating Yammer and Microsoft SharePoint using .NET (Monday 5/12 1:15p) [OFC-B254] – If you have ever had an interest and writing code for Yammer this session is for you.

  • All you need to know about Microsoft Power BI for Office 365 (Monday 5/12 1:15p) [DBI-B211] – If your company is interesting in Business Intelligence, then you should check out what you can do with the Power BI suite of tools.

  • Most Commonly Asked for On-Premises Customizations Reimagined as Applications for SharePoint (Monday 5/12 3:00p) [DEV-B230] – I read this as FTC to CAM.  Specifically this session is centered on the new framework to provision sites using the app model.  Walker and DiZerga are giving this session.

  • Top Ten Non-SharePoint Technical Issues that can doom your implementation (Monday 5/12 3:00p) [OFC-B410] – This should be a good talk explaining some common non-technical hurdles to your SharePoint implementation and adoption.

  • Microsoft Power Query for Excel: Discover and Refine your data (Monday 5/12 3:00p) [DBI-B324] – Another BI session digging deep into the Power BI components.

  • Get Started Developing Applications for Microsoft Office and SharePoint 2013 (Monday, 5/12 4:45p) – This should be a great session if you are new to SharePoint 2013 / SharePoint Online development or are just new to SharePoint development in general.

  • Microsoft’s Roadmap for Enterprise Social (Monday 4:45p) [OFC-B262] – It’s always good to peak in on the Enterprise Social roadmap sessions.

  • Getting Started with Microsoft Office 365 Deployment (Tuesday 5/13 10:15a) [OFC-B242] – For those looking to migrate to Office 365, this session is for you.

  • Introducing Codename “Oslo” and the Office Graph (Tuesday 5/13 5:00p) [OFC-B240] – This session will go into the details of “Oslo” and why it is important.  I missed this session at SPC14, so maybe I’ll get to see it this time.

  • Deep Dive into Developer Advanced Microsoft SharePoint Applications using Third-party JavaScript Libraries (Wednesday 5/14 3:15p) [DEV-B229] – You’re going to see the magic of AngularJS and BreezeJS.  With AC and Thake on the podium, you’re going to learn a lot.

  • Beyond Deployment: How IT can inspire, motivate, and drive sustainable adoption (Wednesday, 5/14 5:00p) – With Cyrielle and Dux this is sure to be a great session on getting more out of your environment.

  • Windows PowerShell 3.0 Administration with Microsoft SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint Online (Thursday 5/15 8:30a) [OFC-B328] – For some reason, Microsoft loves to schedule PowerShell bright and early in the morning.  I’m personally giving this session and I can tell you you’ll learn all about PowerShell scripts for SharePoint 2013 on-premises and SharePoint Online.

  • Microsoft Office 365 Directory Synchronization and Federation Options (Thursday 5/15 8:30a) [OFC-B317] – SSO with Office 365 and your on-premises AD is a bit complicated.  This session should be good if you’re wanting to learn more.

  • Build Connected Productivity Apps for SharePoint and Office (Thursday 5/15 10:30a) [DEV-B228] – My guess is this session is going to into more details around the Office 365 preview APIs.  Plus, the speaker is Brian Jones, so you can’t go wrong.

  • Search Content Enrichment and Extensibility in Microsoft SharePoint 2013 (Thursday 5/15 1:00p) [OFC-B269] – This is my session so I have to recommend it.  We’ll dig into search extensibility in SharePoint 2013 using the Content Enrichment Web Service and Custom Entity Extraction.

  • SharePoint Power Hour: New Developer APIs and Features for Apps for SharePoint (Thursday 5/15 1:00p) [DEV-B390] – I suspect this is a repeat of the SharePoint Power Hour from SPC14 given by Rob Howard.  However Thake and Thorsten are likely to be lively and worth seeing.  This competes with one of my sessions though, but I’ll still recommend it. :)

  • Who are you and what do you want?  Working with OAuth in Microsoft SharePoint 2013 (Thursday 5/15 2:45p) [DEV-B389] – A session by Shupps is worth sticking around for.  This session is sure to go deep and you’ll come out knowing more about OAuth than you ever wanted to.

Unfortunately, due to the site re-design, there is no way to link directly to the session titles so make use of the session codes.  When looking for sessions be sure and look in the Office Servers and Services track as well as the Data Platform and Business Intelligence track.

Hands-on Labs

If you want to get some hands on experience, be sure and head down to the HOL.

As a SharePoint person, you are in the minority.  You need to find friends.  You can usually find them in sessions.  However, I have had the best luck running into people by hanging out in the Microsoft Office Division area.  You’ll find that SharePoint people will be coming through this area throughout the conference.  It’s a great place to stop and ask a question or meet new friends.

Other Sessions to note

Of course, there are a lot of other things going on throughout the week that look interesting.

  • Keynote – Brad Anderson, CVP of Windows Server and System Center, is giving the keynote this year.

  • The Present and Future of .NET in a World of Devices and Services (Monday 5/12 1:15p) [DEV-B210] – This should be an interesting session since it might touch on futures a bit.

  • AlwaysOn in Microsoft SQL Server 2014 (Monday 5/12 1:15p) [DBI-B332] – When designing highly available SharePoint farms, SQL Server is always a part of the mix.  If you haven’t used AlwaysOn yet, this is a good session to learn about it.

  • The Future of .NET on the Server (Tuesday 5/13 8:30a) [DEV-B385] – I find futures talks with .NET always to be interesting.

Hopefully this is a good list to get you started.  Is there anything that I missed that should be on here?  Leave a comment and I’ll get it added.  Also keep an eye out for my TechEd Readiness Checklist post coming soon.  I look forward to seeing everyone there!  Have a good TechEd!
